A First...

Ok, here is goes...This is my first attempt at publishing a web log, better known as a blog.  Let's see where this goes.

This will be some random reflections and thoughts about anything past, present or future.  I saw a video on Facebook the other day. The person being interviewed was talking about how things had changed from the time he was younger and what the last two generations now have or are exposed to, that his generation did not have or was not exposed to.  It was a very interesting conversation and so I thought it would be kind of fun to use that as a basis to start a blog.

On that premise, what do you have, see or use today that was not available for you as a young child? What is different now from back then?

  1. I'm only 25, so I probably don't have the best insight into this, but I do remember going from a word processor (then later a very basic early windows desktop computer), a rotary phone, basic cable, and an AM/FM radio and cassette player as a child to now having all of those things combined in the form of a fancy and portable cell phone that can browse the internet, do word processing, play movies and songs, and share files via blue tooth technology to various other electronic devices.

  2. Thanks Ashley, that's great input. The first video game I ever saw was Pong - a little square floating around the screen and controls that move paddles, sort of like the modern-day air hockey game. I do remember going from a corded to cordless home phone. Our phones went from rotary to pushbutton to clunky wireless with the pull-up antenna to the now modern sleek stealthy units. Speaking of phone...I remember the first car phone I saw was while working at a radio station in Texarkana. The phone sat in a cradle between the front seats and the rest of the unit was in the trunk. My first "mobile" phone was in a bag. As for radios, I had an AM/FM/8-Track player until cassettes came along. Then everything went to CD, then to MP3 and now Satellite. VHS players were the norm for movies for a long time, before the DVD format burst on the scene. I could go on and on, but I'll save that detail for another post. Thanks!

  3. I am a child of the 50's so it would take too long to list everything, even if I could remember. TV's were 19 inches and mostly Black and White, although I remember going to a friend's house and watching their new color TV. There were no home computers, no cell phones, no touch-tone phones, no seat belts, and very few Interstate highways. My aunt took us on a trip to California in 1952 and we drove on Route 66, two lane all the way.. I don't remember air conditioning in homes or cars until I was a teenager, and not many then.
Long Distance calls were rare and for emergencies or special occasions. We kept a three minute egg timer by the phone because the rates went up after the first three minutes. Talk fast!
There are many more things but they will have to wait for another day.

  4. I am spoiled by my times, David. I couldn't stop talking after three minutes on the phone! :)
